“I’m not a foodie, I just like what I like,” she says. “Yes, I know, it’s just like hipsters saying, ‘I’m not a hipster.’ ” (The cliché cracks her up.) “But it’s like when my boss says, ‘Oh, you’re such a foodie.’ I’m like, Oh God. When I hear the word foodie, I think of Yelp. I don’t want to be lumped in with Yelp.” — The Young Foodie Culture — New York Magazine (via buzz)

lol hale naw…this bitch goes “i think it’s fucked up that as a white person i’m not allowed to do anything without offending someone. i am not offended when people dress up as a chasidic jew on halloween even if they know nothing about the culture. i have the authority over myself and if you disagree with my makeup feel free to unfollow me. political correctness is all well and good but there is a point where it gets a bit ridiculous in my opinion. i don’t need to defend myself against you.” after being told that it’s offensive as a white person to culturally appropriate something that is culturally sacred. GURL BYE.

and then she carries on all NANANANA MIDDLE FINGER FUCK ALL YALL!!!!!!!!
but i guess what do U xpect from someone from london ontario

I am compelled to point out a distinction here.  There is a difference between appropriating a culture and celebrating and participating in a culture.  Before I go further: It is clear from her responses found on other blogs that this girl is neither celebrating nor participating, and I’m not defending her actions.

Full disclosure: I’m a white guy.  But I am a white guy who grew up in a predominantly Hispanic community, and while I myself am not Mexican, I grew up celebrating Día de Muertos with my friends in school and the community in which I was reared.

I do think appropriation is an issue, and I do think we should be vigilant to identify and excoriate incidents of it, but we should be deliberate in our actions and, particularly, our words.  Jumping immediately to one’s skin color as explanation of that person’s bias is, at best, unreliable.  Many white people aren’t familiar with many cultures, but there are those who are, and I am one of them.  I don’t want the others thinking we can’t appreciate and even participate in a culture because of our skin color alone, but rather we should acknowledge that while we might appreciate other cultures that doesn’t mean they are ours to take.

For my psychology homework, I have to assign a song or movie/tvshow clip to four of the “Defense Mechanisms” listed in my text book. You’d that that of all the sappy, depressing music I listen to, I’d be able to do this assignment… I’ve been sitting here for half an hour and still have no found one sound abut denial, rationalization, reaction formation, and repression.

Couldn’t the Cell Block Tango be used for rationalization?

By Your Side by Cocorosie could be Denial
