Full disclosure: I’m a white guy.  But I am a white guy who grew up in a predominantly Hispanic community, and while I myself am not Mexican, I grew up celebrating Día de Muertos with my friends in school and the community in which I was reared. I do think appropriation is an issue, and I do think we should be vigilant to identify and excoriate incidents of it, but we should be deliberate in our actions and, particularly, our words.  Jumping immediately to one’s skin color as explanation of that person’s bias is, at best, unreliable.  Many white people aren’t familiar with many cultures, but there are those who are, and I am one of them.  I don’t want the others thinking we can’t appreciate and even participate in a culture because of our skin color alone, but rather we should acknowledge that while we might appreciate other cultures that doesn’t mean they are ours to take.
